The Ottawa Spring Melt: Your 5-Point Home Protection Checklist

Spring Home Maintenance Checklist Ottawa 2026

Don’t Let the Thaw Catch You Off Guard

In Ottawa, we don’t just get spring; we get the "Big Melt." With over 200cm of snow typically falling over the winter, the transition from -10°C to +5°C happens fast. For a homeowner, this is the most critical time of year for your foundation and roof.

At Blue Crown Renovations (BCR), we believe the best renovation is the one you don’t have to do twice because of water damage. Before the rain starts hitting that melting snow, walk through this 5-point checklist to protect your investment.

1. The Gutter & Eavestrough Clear-Out

Even if you cleaned them in November, winter storms often drop small branches and grit from shingles into your gutters.

  • The Fix: Ensure water can flow freely. Clogged gutters lead to "overflow," which dumps gallons of water directly against your foundation wall—the #1 cause of basement leaks in Kanata and Barrhaven.

2. Downspout Extensions (The 6-Foot Rule)

Your gutters are only as good as your downspouts.

  • The Fix: Ensure your downspouts extend at least 6 feet away from your foundation. If they discharge too close, the water just loops back into your weeping tile, overwhelming your sump pump.

3. Foundation "Freeze-Thaw" Inspection

The constant freezing and thawing of the Ottawa soil puts immense lateral pressure on your foundation.

  • The Fix: Walk the perimeter of your home. Look for new hairline cracks or "parging" (the grey coating on the exterior) that has started to flake off. Catching a small crack in March is much cheaper than fixing a flooded basement in April.

4. Sump Pump "Stress Test"

If you have a sump pump, it’s about to become the hardest-working appliance in your house.

  • The Fix: Pour a bucket of water into the pit to ensure the float switch triggers and the pump actually discharges. Pro Tip: In 2026, we highly recommend a battery backup system. Power outages and spring storms go hand-in-hand.

5. Window Well Debris

If you have basement windows, check the "wells." Snow, leaves, and ice can trap water against the glass.

  • The Fix: Clear out any debris so the drain at the bottom of the well can do its job. If the water rises faster than it drains, it will eventually find a way through the window seal.

Protect Your Home’s Value

A little maintenance in March prevents a massive headache in April. At BCR, we care about the structural integrity of your home as much as the beautiful finishes we put inside.
